The trusty mobile phone

Well apparently Tom Holland is married to Zendaya.

I received that news scrolling on my phone ten minutes ago.

The phone. Well, the mobile.

It’s become the first thing we reach for in the morning and the last thing we put down at night. We use it to check the weather, pay our bills, find our way home, watch videos, catch up on gossip and, apparently, discover celebrity marriages.

Somewhere along the way, our mobiles stopped being just phones. They’ve become newspapers, televisions, maps, diaries and social lives all wrapped up in one glowing rectangle.

The strange thing is that most of us can barely remember life without them, yet they’re a relatively new addition to our daily routines. A few decades ago, if you wanted to know whether Tom Holland had married Zendaya, you’d have had to wait for a magazine or a chat with a friend who read a magazine. Now the answer arrives in seconds, whether you asked for it or not.

Perhaps that’s the real power of the mobile phone. It’s not just connecting us to people anymore. It’s connecting us to everything, all of the time.

I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not but I’m happy with its existence as it keeps me connected to life back home in Australia.
