Remember in my previous blog when I mentioned that I’d applied for voluntary redundancy? Well… THEY SAID YES! 😂
After 21 years, it looks as though I’m finally heading towards a new chapter of my life. Twenty one years! That’s a hell of a long time to spend doing anything, never mind working for the same organisation. I’m not entirely sure whether I should be celebrating, panicking, popping the champagne or lying in a darkened room wondering what on earth I’ve just done.
Probably a little bit of all four. People have asked me am I ok, do I know what I’m doing etc etc.
It’s a strange feeling when something you’ve thought about, worried about and contemplated for so long suddenly becomes real. There’s a sense of relief, a little apprehension, and an enormous question mark hanging over what comes next.
The thing is, I have chosen for once in my 60 years what’s coming next. A new job, or unemployment. But hey got to take a risk just once before I die eventually, don’t you think.
But just as I thought life was busy enough throwing one enormous change my way, something else happened that I still can’t quite get my head around.
Last night, I spoke to my half-brother for the very first time.
A half-brother I never knew I had.
A brother from another mother!! Seems my dad left his seed in another country when I was little. He left my mum and went travelling and seems like had flings along the way. One resulted in a little boy none of us knew about.
Imagine going through your life thinking you know your family story, only to discover there’s another person out there who shares a part of your history. Someone you’ve never spoken to, never laughed with, never exchanged stories with, and never had the opportunity to know.
Ancestry DNA. Seriously . It was my son who found him and last night we spoke for the first time he and I. Lots of tears and laughs and for him many questions to come.
I had two brothers, now I have three.
So today I’ve been smiling all day because life can hand you nightmares but it can also hand you rays of sunshine. Mine came yesterday.
