There’s a strange skill you develop in some workplaces, standing in the middle of a mess while looking perfectly composed.
Not because things are going well but because professionalism requires a certain amount of calm while the circus performs around you.
Lately, a manager has been telling other managers that the team is very happy. Thriving, apparently. Great morale. Wonderful atmosphere.
It’s fascinating, really, because part of the team are standing quietly wondering which team they’re talking about.
No one’s staging dramatic rebellions. Not yet anyhow. They’re just doing their jobs, exchanging the occasional look that says, “Are we all seeing the same thing?”
So they carry on. Working. Smiling. Standing politely in the mess.
Mostly hoping that one day someone notices that the “very happy team” looks suspiciously like a group of people patiently waiting for the truth to catch up with the reality.
I know it will.
