There are plenty of things nobody prepares you for when it comes to menopause. Hot flushes, brain fog, sleepless nights and mood swings. But hair loss? That’s a whole different kind of emotional rollercoaster.
Lately, I’ve been navigating thinning hair, and honestly, it’s knocked my confidence more than I expected.
I’ve always worn my hair curly, and my braided hair headband has been an absolute godsend. It gives me coverage, works beautifully with my curls and helps me feel a little more like myself. But….
But now I’m finding myself exploring wigs, wondering whether I can find something that looks natural and makes me feel confident again.
And then there’s the thought of buzzing it all off.
Part of me loves the idea. No more trying to hide thinning patches or spending ages arranging my hair. Just a fresh start.
But another part of me wonders whether I’m ready to say goodbye to my curls.
Menopause isn’t the only thing I’m questioning, either. I’ve also had medication changes, which makes me wonder whether hormones, medication or a combination of factors could be contributing to my hair loss. It’s something I need to explore rather than simply guess at.
The hardest part is wanting to accept myself while simultaneously wanting to hide what’s happening.
I know my worth isn’t measured by the amount of hair on my head. But knowing that and feeling it are two very different things.
Some days I want to embrace the changes. Other days, I just want my old hair back. It’s always been my crown.
I’m learning that acceptance doesn’t mean I have to stop caring about my appearance. If a wig helps me feel good, I’ll wear one. If my headband works, I’ll keep using it. And if I eventually decide to buzz it all off, that will be my choice too.
I’m 60, navigating menopause and trying to be kinder to myself through all these unexpected changes. Honestly there’s a huge list of shit we go through as aging women.
I haven’t figured it all out yet, and perhaps that’s okay.
And if I do end up buzzing it all off, you can guarantee there’ll be a dramatic before and after video moment. If menopause is going to mess with my hair, I might as well get some content out of it!
Let’s talk honestly, because sometimes we need to know we’re not the only ones going through this.
Here is the one wig…….
