At 60, I Finally Started Taking Care of My Skin

I looked at my face in the bathroom mirror and realised I had spent years caring for everyone else while treating my own skin as an afterthought, rushing through the day with whatever moisturiser was nearest, ignoring the dullness, the dryness, and the signs it was aging like leather. That was the moment I decided it was time to finally pay attention and the fact I became an affiliate on TikTok and got to try different skincare.

I won’t lie, it has helped me try out so many that after 3 years I’ve found what suits me and my lifestyle and skin.

When you’re younger, you spend years chasing the perfect foundation, the latest lipstick, or trying to hide every flaw. Then life gets busy. You raise children, work long hours, look after everyone else, and your skincare routine becomes whatever moisturiser is closest to the bathroom sink. The cheap, the one you throw in when doing your grocery shopping.

For me, it is not about trying to look 30 again. That ship has sailed, and honestly, I wouldn’t want to go back. Every laugh line, wrinkle, and grey hair tells the story of a life well lived. A lot of crazy but well lived.

I realised I was not taking care of my skin to erase my age. I wanted to care for it because it has taken care of me for sixty years.

Instead of seeing skincare as vanity, I began to see it as self-care. Five or ten quiet minutes in the morning and evening became something I looked forward to. Cleansing away the day, applying nourishing serums, and giving my skin hydration and self love.

Discovering Korean skincare opened my eyes to a different approach. That routine is a good thing. Sleep and good food and skin care the standard

It’s never too late you know. I’ve realised that now.

My skin feels healthier than it has in years. It looks brighter, more hydrated, and makeup sits better than it used to. Not that I wear much.

More importantly, I feel better. There’s something empowering about investing in yourself at an age when society often tells women they’ve become invisible. (I’ve felt that unseen feeling. )

If anything, we’ve earned the right to put ourselves first once in a while.

So if you’re in your fifties, sixties, seventies, or beyond and wondering whether it’s too late to start looking after your skin, it isn’t.

Not because you’re trying to turn back the clock, but because you deserve to feel good in the skin you’ve lived in for all these years.

Ageing is inevitable.

Looking after yourself is a choice.

At 60, I’ve finally chosen me.
