Where still waters run deep

Have you ever thought about love in the virtual world?

I mean sometimes you can’t have it all, but you get to have maybe a snippet.

A snippet that either becomes nothing or something.

In the virtual world you meet many people. Many friends come and go. Some stay.

Then one day you meet someone. Someone special and your heart beats harder and faster.

You look forward to them logging in and spending time. What is a friendship slowly turns into the feelings of love.

Are those feelings real? I think you can never be sure until you stand in the same space and look into each other’s eyes.

But in the meantime you develop understanding and habits and feelings.

For some that carries out into the real world to become true love. For others it is only whilst you log on and then log off. But the lives are separate.

Then for others, there is the disappointment of lies  and deception and the reality that is so common in the virtual world. Where people travel to be something other than their true selves. They become something or someone who they are not. In the process, forgetting that their lies can hurt beyond the virtual world and stain the hearts of the true romantics they deceive.

Welcome to Love in the virtual world. Where its either waters running smoothly or a current that lays underneath that sweeps when you least expect it.

  1. This blog post hit me hard. I broke up a romantic relationship last month, with great regret but also necessity. We still care about each other, but external factors were making things toxic. I’m now adjusting to being (for the most part) on my own again in Second Life. Thankfully, I have lots of friends around who support me, and I’ve been doing more exploring in-world, finding new places and meeting new people.

I’d argue that in Second Life my avatar represents the ‘real’ me, the me that I can’t really express in the physical world (at least, not yet.) Of course, my voice is a giveaway, something that has knocked a few people sideways when they’ve heard me on voice chat. Actually, that was one of my biggest fears when I first started DJ-ing, that people would turn away when they realised my voice didn’t match my apparent gender. But it turns out that most folks *love* my voice, which had done wonders for my self-esteem. 🙂

    1. Yeah there are many stories of both happiness and sadness in SL.
I think at the end of the day the most important thing is treating each other with respect and decency. Being honest about who we are when the still waters start to run deep. I did read your blog post on the end of your relationship. Sometimes we need to let go of something although familiar, is also ultimately hurting us.
